From costume safety to candy checks—Celebree School’s experts reveal how to make this Halloween unforgettable and secure.”
Halloween is a time for fun, costumes, and candy, but it’s also important to prioritize safety. Surprisingly, only one-third of parents discuss Halloween safety with their children, despite three-quarters expressing concerns, according to SafeKids.org. With some simple precautions, you can ensure this spooky night creates happy memories without unnecessary risks. Follow these essential Halloween safety tips to make the night both fun and safe for your family.
1. Stay Visible
Visibility is key to staying safe while trick-or-treating, especially after dark. Only 18% of parents use reflective tape on their child’s costume, yet it’s one of the best ways to avoid accidents with cars, bikers, or pedestrians. To help your child stand out:
- Add reflective tape to costumes and trick-or-treat bags.
- Equip your child with a flashlight.
- Use glow sticks, necklaces, or bracelets to ensure your little one is seen.
2. Choose Safe Costumes
Costume safety is just as important as creativity. Here are a few tips to make sure your child’s outfit is hazard-free:
- Make sure shoes fit properly and costumes aren’t too long to prevent tripping.
- Consider non-toxic makeup and fun hats instead of masks, which can block vision.
- If your child’s costume includes accessories like swords or sticks, make sure they are soft and short to prevent accidental injuries.
3. Travel in Groups
There’s safety in numbers! Organize a group of at least 4-5 trick-or-treaters, and always have an adult accompany the group. Encourage the buddy system to ensure no one wanders off, and make frequent stops to keep the group together.
4. Keep in Contact
For larger groups, make sure every adult has a cell phone. This way, it’s easy to check in and coordinate as you go. Walkie-talkies can add an extra layer of fun while also helping groups stay connected. Check in with other groups every 30 minutes to 1 hour to ensure everything is going smoothly.
5. Visit Well-Lit Homes
If a house doesn’t have its lights on, it’s usually a sign that they’re not participating. Stick to homes with porch lights on or Halloween decorations, as these are likely to be the most welcoming for trick-or-treaters.
6. Inspect Treats Before Eating
After trick-or-treating, carefully inspect all candy. Only eat factory-wrapped treats, and avoid anything homemade or opened. It’s a simple step that goes a long way in keeping everyone safe.
7. Limit Candy & Offer Healthier Alternatives
It’s easy for kids to go overboard with candy, so be sure to set limits on how much they can have each day. For a healthier Halloween, consider giving out alternatives like fruit snacks, crackers, or even small toys and coloring books.
8. Practice General Safety
Lastly, remind your children of basic safety rules: don’t talk to strangers, stay on the sidewalk, and hold hands with friends or family members when necessary.
