Child Care Oversight and Regulation Lead To Increased Focus on Educational Objectives and Kindergarten Preparedness
By Richard Huffman, CEO/President of Celebree Learning Centers
In Maryland, oversight of daycare, childcare and early education has moved away from the Department of Social Services to under the umbrella of the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).
One of the factors that has led Maryland to have the number one school system in the country is a recognition of the importance of early childhood education, before the age of 5. As a community of parents and families we see that the foundation of care has moved beyond basic custodial care, like wiping noses and changing diapers. Child care providers are no longer just baby sitters — parents want programs to bring educational value.
I have five children of my own, and I see the shift that has taken place. As parents, we expect more now, and that is not going to change. If anything, the bar is going to continue to elevate. Maryland State Department of Education wants programs to become accredited and early childhood educators to be individually credentialed. This means centers pay more for teachers – true teachers with educational degrees and not just care givers. This means that day care centers are moving to true child development and learning centers and investing in structured curriculums and educational programs.
There is no doubt that child care can be one of the most expensive items in a family’s budget. But there is true value there — a value that can be recognized in giving our children a solid foundation on their path through K-12 schooling. We have found parents are comfortable with the cost when they see their children not only blossoming, but excelling when they do start their academic journey.
