The child development professionals at Celebree School shed light on National Read Across America Day: The National Education Association’s annual reading motivation and awareness program.
The National Education Association (NEA) is the nation’s largest professional employee organization committed to advancing the cause of public education. According to their site, NEA’s 3 million members work at every level of education, from preschool to university and graduate programs.
Children who are enthused about school often perform better overall. Motivating children to read is an essential aspect in student achievement and creating lifelong successful readers. NEA’s Read Across America is a program established for children and families to celebrate the act of reading.
So how can you help build a nation of strong, confident readers? Encourage your children to read. Whether you are reading something together, or helping them pick something out, explain the importance of reading and the benefits of the activity.
You can celebrate too! Reading not only helps your children learn and grow, but helps you as a parent. Adults who regularly read can experience some of the following benefits:
1. Stress Reduction – Work stressors, personal relationships and daily struggles with the kids seemingly fall to the wayside when you find yourself lost in a great story. A well-written novel or engaging article can drain away any tensions and allow you to find relaxation.
2. Vocabulary Expansion – The more you read, the more exposure you have to the English language. The words that you retain from the stories you read can make their way into your daily conversations, showing that you are articulate and well-spoken, often helping with credibility in a work profession.
3. Mental Stimulation – Studies have shown that staying mentally stimulated can slow the progress (or even possibly prevent) Alzheimer’s and Dementia.
4. Improved Focus – In a world bombarded with the internet and every day distractions, we’re being pulled in several directions (quite literally at times) all at once. When the kids finally go to sleep, grab a blanket and devote all of your attention to a good book. Your mind and your kids will appreciate this new level of concentration you’ll begin integrating into your day-to-day.
5. Knowledge – The more information you retain, the better-equipped you are to tackle any challenge.
It is quite clear how reading can benefit the mental development of both children and their parents. There’s no excuse! Run to the local library after school and pick up something for the kids and something for yourself. Implement a “reading hour” within your household and celebrate National Read Across America Day together.
